EDSA - Shangri La Manila is just half-way between my office and where I live. Whenever I pass by my curiosity of how does it feel like staying there increases day by day. That is when an opportunity came for me to stay there, I made sure is gonna be the the most special day of my life - my birthday. My travel around the Philippines and SE Asia are all through the most affordable if not the cheapest accommodation around. Because I always believe that travel is all about the place I visit. The word "luxury" in my own travel adventures do not actually exist in my vocabulary.
My one night stay at EDSA Shangri-La Manila proved to me that luxury not only adds the best experience to every way possible but also creates an unforgettable experience for the rest of my travels.
Like many variations of one-nights, this one is really worth the heck. And if you ask me what to compare our staycation here, it is gonna be that rare one-night stand of your life. You seize the moment by indulging to a luxury you both rarely don't have to each other - time and commitment. Time because I only have 21 hours to stay. Commitment that I would always spend just enough during my trips is exactly the opposite here.
We always have misconceptions about luxury. We thought it is always a waste of money. But boy if you have been working freaking hard, why not reward yourself a day of rest and best pampering you can have?
EDSA Shangri-La Manila is composed of 632 rooms divided into two wings - the cosmopolitan Tower Wing and the Tropical Garden Wing. Shangri-la hotels are 5-star hotels located around the world. The word "Shangri-la" by the way was named after the legendary land featured in James Hilton's 1933 novel entitled "Lost Horizon".
I checked in following the standard time of 2pm with my Mom. As soon as I gave my reservation info from the good looking frontliner guy who greeted me right away for my birthday with a smile is enough for me to start wonderfully my stay here. A Sri Lankan staff ushered us to our room in the 10th floor and taught us how to use the access card to get in and out of the elevator.
We got a Tower Wing Premier room that is so spacious for the two of us! Really great to see how it looks so good and of course thrilled to see an executive office space. The size of this room is 46 square meter or 495 square foot of luxury. Right after we got inside, another boy staff handed us a complimentary set of fruits - mango and apple served in a small plate with a beautiful orchid flower on top. Looks great!

My mom who loves watching TV cannot thank Shangri-la more for having this really huge flat screen.
Below the TV is a mini-bar cabinet full of stuff. I felt really lucky to have found my favorite bags of chamomile tea and coffee creamer.
While we are fixing our things, the door knocked and super touched that they delivered me a complimentary birthday cake. Aaawww, this is so sweet! And then a call from a girl is asking if we have already indeed this birthday present. I thanked her from the bottom of my heart.
While we explore every bit of our room, everything is so SPACIOUS - from the king size bed, to the bathroom, to the cabinet et cetera. Now this is called luxury.
What more can we ask for? We have everything we need in this room. For amenities:
complimentary wireless Internet access, cable television, clear in-house movie channels, office equipment & stationery, full-size executive writing desk, international direct dial telephone, voice mail electronic safe. For bath & personal care: toiletries, hair dryer, iron & ironing board, refreshments, coffee / tea-making facilities and mini bar.
This spacious, modern bathroom has a soaking tub, separate shower cubicle and a powder room complete with everything a girl like me needs.
By 3pm, I had to head over to the Chi the Spa for my 2-hour luxurious spa package. I left my mom with her eyes all glued to tv. I will be having their Secrets of the Sea package which uses virgin coconut oil with ylang - ylang extracts for my body massage and a combination of a certain kind of lotus and real salt all the way from Dead Sea of Israel for my body scrub.
I passed by to this really great-looking lagoon pool . How I wish I can swim here but I forgot to bring my swimsuit. Anyway I am sure this is not going to be the last time I will visit EDSA Shangri La Manila.
With my Mom, she is super camera-shy by the way completely opposite of me! |
It is around 6pm when I went back, as expected my mom's eyes still glued on the tv. We headed out to the nearest mall to meet a friend for dinner. We came back at around 8pm, took a warm shower, drank a cup of chamomile tea and watched tv again.
With the office desk and their very strong wifi connection, I am so thankful that I was able to check my emails from my smartphone - responded to a few important emails. From time to time I have to go online to check who are greeting me. Thank you Shangri-La Manila for the very strong connection!
We woke up around 5am in the morning feeling refreshed as if we had a vacation somewhere. I cannot really believe that this place is actually just 15 min away from EDSA Ave but I can hardly hear any sound of traffic from afar. The best gift I had in the morning of my birthday - a sunset behind a few skyscrapers of Ortigas. Just so you know I am in love with sunsets and sunrises, this is the first ones I forward whenever I travel.
We took a shower around 7am and headed to HEAT restaurant for our buffet breakfast. Wow, I did not expect this actually. .. a buffet breakfast. After that we strolled around and the swimming pool lagoon. By 9am we went back to our room, we are so tummy-full that we fell asleep. By 11am we prepared ourselves and checked out before 12 noon.
Here are my scores for my staycation here:
Staff: 5 out 5
Room : 5 out 5
Cleanliness: 5 out 5
Food: 5 out of 5
