Yesterday, I had the opportunity to join fellow bloggers to learn about a competition for baristas (people  preparing coffee/beverage in a coffee shop and/or restaurants) - the 2nd Philippine National Barista Championship, to happen this coming Oct. 15 - 17, 2014 at Resorts World Manila.

We were joined by Mr. Leo De Leon, Pres. & Gen. Manager of Allegro Beverage Corporation which is the exclusive platinum sponsor of this event and Kevin Fortu, the reigning Philippine Barista National Champion of 2013. He is also the Philippines' first ever representative to the World Barista Championship last June 9th - 12th at Remini, Italy who competed with the rest of 54 participants from around the world.

Mr. Leo started the conversation saying that our very own baristas should have all the reasons to excel in this kind of competition because we are one of the best coffee producers in the world. Not to mention that coffee is undeniably is part of our lives. I can totally relate to this because I myself cannot start my day without drinking a hot cup of coffee.

The partnership of Allegro Beverage Corporation, the country's leader in providing complete beverage solutions and the Association of Filipino Baristas Inc., a licensed national body of World Coffee Events to the Philippines will surely make this event very successful.

Mr Leo also wanted to emphasize that through staging Philippine National Barista Championship events,  their goal is that a local barista should no longer be seen as just a person who is behind the counter preparing our orders but as a professional with refined skills in a culinary art. Kevin also gave us the chance to witness how he prepares a cappuccino, espresso and a bit of coffee art-making.

The Philippine National Barista Championship recognizes professional achievement in the art and skill of espresso beverage preparation and service. The barista participants will be preparing 12 coffee drinks: 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos and 4 original espresso-based signature beverages of their own creation all within the 15 minute timeframe.

Seven judges including 4 sensory judges, 2 technical judges and 1 head judge will evaluate each of the presented drinks. The winner of the 2nd Philippine National Barista Championship will represent the Philippines in the 2015 World Barista Championship on Apr. 9 - 12 at Seattle, USA.
