Events and Festivals in Surigao del Norte
STO. NIÑO DE BAD-ASAY FESTIVAL
Where: Brgy. Serna, Surigao City
When: every January 14 Surigao del Norte celebrates one month long in honor and feast of the Holy Child Jesus held in the farm village of Barangay Serna. Surprisingly, the majority of the locals in this province are Catholics. This is pun intended but I was thinking since this is part of Mindanao, most are Muslims but no. Devotees particularly those who have experienced miracle through this baby saint who offer prayers to give thanks followed by a "sirong" dance to offer petitions.
SUROY SA SURIGAO
Where: Around Surigao del Norte
When: Feb-May
To promote the Surigao del Norte's tourist destinations, the local government unit organizes many projects focusing on “voluntourism”. Guests and locals join to reach needy families by giving food and usually school supplies.
INTERNATIONAL DRAGON BOAT RACE
Where: Boulevard, Surigao City
When: May 3rd week
Several local and international dragon boat teams vie to be champions of this contest. This year, the grand champion is no other than the Surigaonons themselves. Yours truly was one of the media/blogger participants who covered this event.

Where: Brgy. Taft, Surigao City
When: June 1
A procession at sea in honor of the Patron Saint of Barangay Taft, Virgen de la Paz Y BuenViaje. The patroness of good voyage is carried aboard beautifully adorned lead vessel followed by colorful motorboats and bancas along the historic Surigao Strait. Please note that there's also a similar fluvial parade in the nearby Butuan City - do not be confused.
TILAW FOOD FESTIVAL
Where: TBA
When: August or September
Showcases the Surigaonon culinary heritage through food fairs and competitions designed to upgrade the city’s food and beverage industry. Tilaw means taste. Usually held during the National Tourism Week Celebration, it showcases exotic seafood and a smorgasbord of Surigaonon products including delicacies. This is also the chance where locals show off their culinary talents.
CHARTER DAY ANNIVERSARY
Where: Surigao City
When: August 31
This event changes per the local administration's wishes. Surigao City basically holds a week long socio-civic and cultural celebration to mark Surigao City’s hood.
BONOK-BONOK MARADJAW KARADJAW FESTIVAL
Where: Surigao City
When: September 9
If Cebu has Sinulog, Surigao del Norte has Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival. This is the province's iconic cultural-religious festival highlighted by a street dance parade depicting the legends and lifestyle of the indigenous Mamanwa Tribes. The festival is also tribute to St. Nicolas, City’s Patron Saint, whose feast is observed on September 10.
COMMEMORATION OF THE BATTLE OF SURIGAO STRAIT
Where: TBA
When: October 25
A dawn observance of the significant naval Battle during World War II marked with wreath-laying at the historical landmark in Barangay Lipata. The Battle of Surigao Straits is part of the Bigger Battle of Leyte Gulf which turned the tide of the War in favor of the Allied Forces. PASKUHAN SA SURIGAO December 1-24 A month long celebration of the advent season with the trademark Surigaonon character, starting with the light up the trees, misa de gallo and painit at the park which ends with the midnight mass on Christmas.
