The kids are the ones who suffer the most when there's war or even at home when they should be expected to be completely safe from harm. During the centennial celebration of Save the Children, I had the honor to learn so much about this organization that aims to protect the lives of so many innocent children who in one way or another were deprived of the basic rights that we deserve as humans.
It was in early 19th century that Eglantyne Jebb from UK founded the Save The Children foundation. She is a very outspoken defender of the children back when our society do not have laws and proper understanding of how the minors in our society should be treated. Fast forward to today, Save the Children has
spread out to 120 countries and helped 157 million kids.
Save The Children - Philippines has raised concern about the ones who are living in the conflict affected areas in Mindanao. Around 3.6 million kids of Muslim Filipinos suffer grave violations of their own rights. With the help of Save The Children - Philippines, assistance has been provided to more than 22, 000 kids affected by the Marawi siege such as hygiene kits, learning & teaching materials and psychosocial support. Not only that, Save The Children Philippines bagged the Ripple Awards Project of the Year for providing HIV testing for young people. Philippines is one of the countries with the highest number of HIV positives that's why this is considered a win for the entire population who can relate to this kind of challenge.
The most important of all is Save The Children - Philippines is working hard for the fullest implementation of R.A. 11148 or Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay (First 1, 000 Days Law) to help malnourished kids below 5 years old. The kids are five million in total mostly located in Mindanao. Prior to this , Save The Children - Philippines has been implementing Project Nurture (Nutrition Among Urban Poor through Unified Response) that provides health and nutrition assistance to poor households.
In this celebration, Katarina Rodriguez who is Miss World Philippines 2018 was formally announced as Save The Children - Philippines Ambassador. One of her duties is to promote children's rights. I really admire people like her who is already successful in her chosen field but still devotes time to an advocacy that lift the lives of many children. "We need to educate children about the value of peace during their formative years", said Rodriguez.
The global campaign of Save The Children is "Stop the War on Children". I wish that Save The Children specially the Philippines branch would continue to help kids for as many as centennial years to come.
